The solution to a Fortune 100 biopharma company's app fragmentation woes
Throughout four phases (Discover, Define, Design, and Deliver) of this 15-week project, we tailor-made an extensive and fully annotated design system called Unity for Abbvie BTS (Business Technology Solutions). It comprised eight foundational chapters, three data visualization chapters with 18 unique charts and graphs, 33 components, and a handful of example pages. The final script file weighed in at 218 pages long.
The need for cohesion, creativity, and coordinated speed to market drove this project from its conception.
Problem Statement
Every internally authored and managed application utilized unique UX and UI design patterns and inconsistent framework markups, styles, and behaviors. This created a landscape of inconsistent user experiences and fragmented framework libraries across the company worldwide. To further complicate matters, the client’s small UX team was not large enough to fulfill the demands of new bespoke application development across the company.
Solution
Standardize the user experience across all future applications by implementing a common set of standards, rules, design patterns, and framework libraries. Increase the quality of design and add speed to production for all internal Abbvie applications (i.e. create an enterprise design system).
Benefit
Increased the speed of delivery for net new apps while unifying the user experience and increasing the bandwidth of the UX team, BTS team, and contractors working within the space. Implementation of the adoption strategy created an environment for immediate adoption by the UX and BTS teams on net new projects, and the governance program created a scalable model for appending and extending the enterprise design system, thus increasing its lifespan.
Creating an enterprise system in 15 weeks takes a coordinated team meeting tough deadlines.
