Bringing every division and business unit web property into one component library

This multi-year, multi-website, and multi-platform digital transformation project consolidated a top medical device company’s divisional websites (and associated business unit websites) into a single, consistent customer experience. At the end of the project, a total of 41 websites were launched internationally, with 19 sites launched the following year.
Ten disparate divisions, dozens of business units, 3 experience managers, one consistent experience

Problem

Our client's divisional websites were all independently developed. Some didn't follow corporate guidelines. Some haven't been updated in years. Some had massive page counts but with little traffic. Each division came with their own unique set of problems. Our client wanted to make sure every divisional site was easy to use, followed corporate brand guidelines, and no longer had 10s of thousands of pages that didn't have any traffic.

Solution

Consolidate ten disparate division websites into a single consistent experience by utilizing predesigned components and templates on 3 versatile experience  managers.

Benefit

41 websites launched for 10 divisions across 3 platforms delivering a consistent customer experience
19 additional websites launched the following year
20% decrease in time to market for site launches
New pages no longer require design or development intervention*
The UX and Design team worked cross functionally with every group involved.

My Responsibilities

UX Lead: I led all things related to the user experience, including business and functional requirement gathering and co-writing (with the technical lead), IA (for specific divisions), requirement annotated wireframes for all components and templates, UX and design governance, and consulting for internal, client, and partner agencies.

Temporary Creative Lead (6 months): I stepped in to lead the experience design team after a sudden departure from leadership. During this time, I led two designers overhauling the entire style guide. We utilized the atomic design methodology to bring easy scaling and consistency downstream.

Managed the Content Mapping Team. We mapped all the content to the appropriate template and component for some websites. For others, we consulted on how to map content to components and templates.

Governance UX and Design SME: Two divisions required their platforms, while almost all divisions had partner agencies. I collaborated with each agency to ensure knowledge transfer between UX and design teams. I also worked with our technical lead on conversations with the development agencies (where necessary).
